Before the king's notaries in the city and royal jurisdiction of Montreal, here residing and undersigned, was present - René Lavoix, minor, voyageur, resident of coste de Notre Dame des Vertues on this island, and here present in this said city, who has volontarily hired himself to sieur Joseph Douaire Bondy, merchant and resident of this city, living in his home situated at Baie St Paul and accepting the said undersigned in his employ, who, at his first request, will leave the said city to journey to the post and vicinity of Detroit, to return the same year with the ordinary convoys and to help both in going to and from, to take the canoes, merchandise, and pelts belonging to the said sieur, to take care of his property, and other travelling implements, to obey him or those who will will be in charge of the canoes, to serve him faithfully, make his profit, avoid his loss, and inform him if any occur, and generally to do all that he will be able to do, to not leave his employ or perform any personal trade without his consent under penalty of the ordinance and forfeiture of his wages and employ, this for the sum of eighty livres, currency in this country, and in addition, a cotton shirt, a pair of mittens, and one ... , which salary shall be paid to him on his return to the city less any expenses, damage, and interest, for such &c., promising &c., obliging &c., made and contracted in the said Montreal, in the study of the said notaries undersigned, in the year seventeen hundred and fifty three, the sixth day of May, in the presence of the hired help undersigned, who has declared being unable to write nor sign this agreement following its reading, according to the ordinance.
