Was present Jean Baptiste Lavoye resident of this city, who has vonlontarily hired himself to Sr. François Demers, resident of this city, here present, to go to Missillimakinac and descend in the first year when the canoes will descend from the said place, to help going up, by bringing a canoe loaded with merchandise and on returning, to bring a canoe loaded with skins. Which merchandise, in going and which skins in returning, the said hired help promises to do the best he can as is possible for him to make, to obey the said Sr. Montfort, to serve him faithfully, to earn his profit, avoid his loss, to warn them if they learn of anything and generally do all that will be legally asked of him to do, and be able to do, being forbidden to leave the service without the approval of the said Montfort under forfeiture of wages

This agreement made on condition that the said hired help be fed as is customary to do among the voyageurs, and for the sum of fifty livres, French currency, as his wages during the said period, that shall be paid to him on his return to this city, in beaver and other pelts, and as the merchants shall take them.

For such, &c made and contracted in this said city of Ville Marie, study of the said notary, in the year seventeen hundred and twenty three, the second day of June, in the forenoon, in the presence of the said Louis Lefebvre Ducheriquet and Francois L'Archevêque, witnesses, living in the said city of ville marie, undersigned, and the said Sr Montfort signed. The said hired help has declared being unable to sign after being asked to do so according to the ordinance.
